Much credit for Media Lead's involvement in mobile goes to two individuals, both veterans of the mobile phone business -- Kobsak Chinawongwatana and Kazuhiko Konda. Kuhn- Kobsak's family owned company, Jackson Company Ltd., represents a number of the world's leading handset manufacturers and mobile phone operators in Thailand, including a large equity stake in Thailand's #3 mobile operators, TRUE (formerly Telecom Asia- Orange). This was my first introduction to mobile as Kobsak's companies became our Internet partner in Thailand. Today, Kobsak is Chairman and CEO of FreeIntegration Company Ltd. based in Bangkok, whose lines of businesses include Internet services. At its peak, Freei Asia enjoyed over 3 million Internet subscribers make it one of the largest ISPs in Asia at the time, and now has been renamed Freeintegration Co. Ltd., focusing on migrating customers to high-speed Internet access. Konda-san founded a company in the late 90s called Media Portal Japan (MPJ) funded by Softbank and Toshiba to offer mobile phone barcode solutions and applications to NTT DoCoMo and other mobile operators. The onset of the "camera phone" forced MPJ to pull back from the U.S. market, but it remains a thriving niche provider of services to Japan's largest mobile carrier customers. Media Lead founders represented MPJ's business in the United States prior to Media Lead's formation. Weihua Zhang helped guide Media Lead to mobile entertainment in the early going when the company was formed in July of 2003.
